Old town

The old town was built on a slope, on the banks of the Vistula River tributary - the river Kamionka, next to the castle of the dukes of Mazovia built a few years earlier in place of the oldest parts of the current Royal Castle, north of the village Warsaw. Its origins date back to the thirteenth century. Then I was surrounded by a rampart, which at the end of the fourteenth century it was replaced by a fortified wall. He dragged himself from the Vistula embankment to the west, along today's Podwale to Piekarska, then next to the church. Martin up to the castle. It is believed that the founder of the city was Boleslaw II, Duke of Mazovia and Plock. Due to its favorable location on the trade route from the Black Sea to the Baltic, they settled in Old Warsaw mostly wealthy merchants. The residue of the Warsaw section of this road shopping street is today St. John's, Market and Nowomiejska.
